Nightbeasts ~ Wes Sullivan Interview

Nightbeasts a new horror thriller coming soon , written and directed by Wes Sullivan. The movie dives into the legend of Sasquatch or bigfoot as it is commonly called. Not only does Wes enjoy his job as writer and director, but he researched the legend of Sasquatch and even from the Native American Indians, whom have many stories of the beast the walks, or the creature of the night.

NightBeasts Poster

We have the chance to talk with Wes about his style, his passion and the willingness to be not only the man behind the camera, but the man with pen in hand, to take queues from the cast members and create a story that should not only entertain, inform but also scare the hell out of you at some point. Wes does not go for the juglar vein but you will find out from our interview there are a few surprises in this movie. I avoid spoilers and we know the public will love to see Nightbeasts when the movie is released hopefully in the near future.

This transcript is in text only as Carlos being a resident of Madrid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madrid asked that we exchange ideas via email since American English is not his preferred language.

Proxmia Awards

iSCIFI. tv:Being a fan of many type of science fiction on television

and in movies, we noticed you reference star wars and star trek, is there favorite

Carlos: Yes, I am a Trekkie. ?PROXIMA? is a SF movie about SF and SF lovers and, tastes aside, I think Star Trek is SF and Star Wars is not (it?s just fantasy). That?s what one of the characters is telling at video store sequence. I respect Star Wars liking, but me and my movie, as a pro-SF activists, tends to favor Star Trek, as you can see.

iSCIFI. tv: Proxima felt like a self discovery of ones orgin or creator. Did your religious beliefs influence you when creating the story.

Carlos: My religious culture more than my religious beliefs. When you see ?PROXIMA? you find a lot of religious references. It?s a premeditated exercise. Anyway the movie is about faith. Not about faith in God, but faith in something else. It is a simple question: is life meaningless or is there some kind of order in the universe? When we face faith is not possible to forget our religious influences, our cultural substrate. Apart from it, there are more matter in ?PROXIMA?, not strictly religious. ?Anthropological? questions are: what is our fate as species? Must we live on Earth for ever? Could this sedentarism be dangerous and anti-evolutionary? If we are not alone, what if ?they? find us before we find ?them??

iSCIFI. tv: You were both writer and director, do you prefer performing duel role in the creation of a film, or just behind the camera?

Carlos: Maybe I am basically a writer who makes movies. In fact I devote much more time writing than filming. But I I can’t get these two roles apart, I always write and direct my movies.

iSCIFI. tv: Manel Sol?s who played Felix, was very strong willed in this film akin to Obi Wan (star wars). How is such energy created ?

Carlos: It?s curious this comparison between ?Felix Cadecq? and ?Obi Wan?. I had not thought in it, but it seems a good simile. Anyway, ?Felix Cadecq? is directly inspired by famous SF writer Philip K. Dick (my favorite one together with Lem). The SF convention sequence is an imitation of the scandalous lecture K. Dick did in Metz in 1977. And his peculiar concept about reality/dream mixture spreads along the whole film.

iSCIFI. tv: Was Tony mad (lossing his mind), being brainwashed by Felix CDs?

Carlos: I think no, but the audience can do their own interpretation. Surely it depends on the realism level of each one. I have seen the most ?pragmatist? people interpret it as a progressive hallucination, because they are no willing to believe it can be real. On the other hand, the most ?dreamer? people (like me) prefer to believe. It is a choice. This film is a mirror: according to your interpretation you?ll find what sort of view of the world you have. But let me say I did this movie as a dreamer and thinking about dreamers and their capacity for realize their dreams. For me Tony was ill just before that ?brainwashing?, not after.

iSCIFI. tv: Natalia was not a very nice woman and wanted to control Tony and his way of life. Was Tony traveling in his mind to escape Natalia?

Carlos: Natalia symbolizes the littleness, the people who does not see beyond the tip of his nose, who has lose the capacity of dream. She represents the world of routine, current conventions, prejudices and prefabricated ideas. That?s real life wich devastates fantasy. That?s reality, but some people (?Tony?) thinks that there must be other realities. For him, ?real life? is death.

iSCIFI. tv: Will we on Earth ever seen Tony return from his Journey (without spoiling what may be next for your production team)

Carlos: It?s a warning: probably we will not. If we don?t take conquest of space seriously maybe our fate will be to die like a plant trapped in a flowerpot too small. Let?s ignore demagogic messages and don?t waste time. Shoulders to the wheel!, infinite Space is our natural destination.

iSCIFI. tv: I loved the musical score! Was the music written while filming or in post?

Carlos: In post, of course. I love the music too. A 75% was made by Xavier Tort, a great musician from Barcelona, and a 25% by TMK (Thee Maldoror Kollective), a stunning band from Turin. TMK has edited their soundtrack pieces recently in a CD, called ?Themes for Proxima?. Xavi and TMK are really different but also complementary, and musical score is one of the best things in the movie.

ISCIFI. tv: How long did it take to film the Proxima?

Carlos: Two months filming and six months editing, mixing and making visual effects. It is an ?indy blockbuster?.

iSCIFI. tv: What project are you working on?

Carlos: I have just finished a short film, ?Scream Queen?. You?ll can see it soon. It is not SciFi, just fantasy. But next year I want fo film an old project, my movie about British magician Aleister Crowley. I have been two years working on the screenplay, and I am finishing it now. It will be a very odd movie starred by Manuel Sol?s (?Felix Cadecq? in ?PROXIMA?).

iSCIFI. tv: Thank you so much for your time and we wish you more success.

Carlos: Thank you, it has been a pleasure. Hope someday see you in ?Proxima?.

Movie Review ~ In Bruges

In Bruges Movie review:
Starting Colin Farrell (Ray), Brendan Gleeson (Ken), Ralph Fiennes (Harry)

Bruges a quiet little town in Belgium gets a visit from two hired hit men, to cool off and take a holiday. Only to find out that ther are on the ‘job’ and the job being that Ray is the mark and Ken to carry out the job as directed by their boss Harry.

Although this movie is slated as a comedy and you get some of that from the previews. This movie is DARK and depression with some comedy elements thrown in. A barrage of F*bombs, sarcasm and British does not make up for the message behind this movie. Don’t go to Bruges for holiday, you are just going to get bumped off by your partner (Ken) or your boss.

Bruges looks like a beautiful town and Harry refers to the town as something out of a dream, or a fairy-tale, when he is just wanting to kill Ray for a mistake on his first job.

In Bruges gets 1.5 stars and is rated R: for violence , language, gore, nudity, drug use.

Moview Revie ~ John Rambo

John Rambo. Aka Rambo 4, aka The guy getting too old to keep doing this crap.

Starring Sylvester ‘Rocky’ Stallone and a body count that numbered in the 100s.

John Rambo looks like crap, he is just too old, pudgy but still able to kick some ass. He is back in Asia (Thailand) living as a loner with bandits and the like in the jungles that he just could care less that they exited. He is hired by a group of missionaries to take them up river to save villagers that are being killed in games of death by a group of miltary wana-bes that are only there to kill.

Of course what Rambo movie would it be if we didn’t have heads blow off, limbs removed and guts spilling. With Rambo you get it all and some. This movie is overly violent, and blood flows free in in Thailand when it comes to Rambo. I would not expect anything less from Rambo, and although Stallone directed and co-wrote this movie , his dialog is non Rambo. He is like a silent killer with a big head, dude his head looks two times the size of normal humans!

John Rambo gets 2 stars and is Rated R: for you guessed it . Gore, violence , explosions, torture, rape, language .

Movie Review ~ Cloverfield

CLOVERFIELD MOVIE REVIEW

A bunch of 20somethings in New York throw a going away party for Rob ( Michaael Stahl-David ). During the party all hell breaks loose in the city from a loud bang, the head of the Statue of Liberity flying down the road to several other events that may just bring the city to its knees.

The movie is told through a video camera that was found in Cloverfield aka New York’s Central Park. The opening scene in the movies give you the images from the camera that was ‘found’ near the incident area of Cloverfield , as if we were watching what the government found first time. Be warned since this movie was filmed with handheld camera, just like your home movie, the shaking of the camera, the closeup to wide angle changes will give you a bad case of veritgo or even flu like symptoms. I suggest sitting at least 10 rows back, if not up higher in a theater that offers stadium seating.

Our heroes of this movie, is mankind. We do not know where this creature came from, but we know through the eyes of the camera, its just scary as hell to be in New York. This creature eats building, people, tanks and only gets more aggressive when the military comes after it. With the wild camera movement, you see what looks like smaller versions of the creature that are akin to Starship Troopers bugs, or spideras from 8 Legged Freaks. Either way, they will bit you and you will die with massive hemorrhages , well who wouldn’t after getting bit by a critter 80% you body size.

The hype this movie got was so similar to 1989’s Batman, and I give the PR company and the production company and A+ on their marketing of this film. For months we asked ourself what the heck is Cloverfield. No after the movie I’m still asking myself that!

I would epected this movie to fair well aside from the sea-sickness you might get. When this movie hits the home market on DVD, HdDVD/Blueray it should fair well , since the handheld camera should translate well to the home market.

Overall I give this movie 2.5 stars. Wish we had move time to address some of the relationship issues in this film, or to see another retrospective of this film e.g. photo’s or footage from other witnesses.

Cloverfield is Rated pg-13. For scenes of mayhem, language, violence, terror, disturbing images.
